Spider-Man (Tom Holland) officially swung his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through 2016's "Captain America: Civil War." Though his screen time in the ensemble flick was minimal, compared to the likes of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Cap (Chris Evans) himself, this turned out to be the perfect primer for his first MCU solo movie, "Spider-Man: Homecoming," all the same. This film went a long way in solidifying Peter Parker as a legitimate pillar of the sprawling franchise, and because of its strong critical and monetary success, a sequel came to be in short order.
"Spider-Man: Far From Home" arrived at cinemas everywhere in 2019 to tell the next chapter of Spidey's story. With the events of "Avengers: Endgame" behind him and Tony Stark now gone, Peter feels lost, his confidence is shaken, and he's unable to fully embrace his heroic alter-ego. Thankfully, there's a new hero in town that's able to help fill in the voids that Tony and some of the other founding Avengers left in their wake. Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, possesses both a vast array of abilities that allow him to take down some truly formidable foes — or so he leads everyone to believe — and quite a unique costume. Tenured actor Jake Gyllenhaal brought the "hero" Mysterio to life in "Far From Home," and he had some strong feelings about the very much comic book-inspired outfit he had to wear in doing so.
Technically speaking, Mysterio wears two different costumes in "Far From Home." Once the reveal comes that he's just an actor who has no real intention of being a hero, he wears a motion-capture suit as a part of his elaborate, drone-enhanced public illusions. However, when he builds up his image as a supposed good guy, he dons green and gold armor, a purple cape with green accents, and, as his Marvel Comics counterpart has for decades, a fishbowl-like helmet. Apparently, when it comes to the second outfit of the two, Jake Gyllenhaal couldn't get enough of it.
"He was like, 'Can I be in the costume? I really feel the character, I get it,' so, not only is this costume practical, but he wears it everywhere it makes sense to wear it," recalled producer Eric Carroll in an interview with Screen Rant, ironically noting that he and the rest of the "Far From Home" crew initially assumed that Gyllenhaal wouldn't want to have the outfit on that much with it being completely practical. Although, that's not to say the Mysterio costume was perfect. Gyllenhaal has stated that he felt like a T-rex while wearing its large, movement-inhibiting golden vambraces.
Motion Capture Setup Given their basis in print, where imagination is the only limitation, in the real world, superhero costumes can be a pain to wear and move around in. Evidently, that's not entirely the case for Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio getup, which he seemed to adore having on.
